Honda anticipates a mid-sized unibody pickup may be just what today’s market is ready to embrace. The first Honda Ridgeline raised skepticism for its unibody design and sales were less than robust. But today is a different time as unibodies have practically taken over the market from body-on-frame SUVs. Honda is hedging its bets that a carry-all, comfortable-riding mid-size pickup will be that “just-right” option for some who might not otherwise choose a pickup.

The new Ridgeline is built on the same platform as Honda’s new Pilot and shares its direct-injected 3.5-liter V-6 and six-speed automatic, as well as its four-wheel-drive system. A front-wheel drive will be offered on some 2017 Ridgelines. Low-to-the-ground and super smooth, it feels very car-like. There’s a lot of thought behind what you might want to store inside or haul in the bed. Flip-up the rear seat to find a 2.9 cubic foot of under-seat storage area, or haul a bike or two with the seats up. The bed is longer than before, at 64 inches, and the Ridgeline is the only truck in the class that can take a four-by-eight-foot sheet of building material lying flat between the wheel wells.
